Something remarkable happened on my latest adventure. I’d chosen a stunning coastal spot for my vacation, opting for a quaint place near the beach, despite its distance from town. The ocean view from my lodging was breathtaking.
As a photographer, my mornings began with a leisurely walk along the shore, followed by moments under a tree, jotting down thoughts. It felt like a scene from a romantic film—waves crashing gently, a soft breeze brushing my skin, and a smile I wished could last forever.
On the fourth day, while strolling by the ocean, I noticed a fisherman on his boat, casting nets. I’d seen him before, but always far out at sea. Intrigued, I grabbed my camera to capture his craft.
I lingered until he rowed to shore, eager to chat. He needed to store his catch first but warmly invited me to his home, just across from the beach. I agreed.
At his house, I met his wife and three daughters. They welcomed me kindly, offering homemade fish, which I politely declined as a vegetarian, though I savored their chai.
Curious, I asked about his life. He shared how his days started at 5 a.m.—cleaning the shore for free so his daughters and other kids could play safely, fetching water from a well a mile away, and fishing. The fish fed his family and provided their sole income through sales.
What struck me was their contentment. Despite having so little, their faces glowed with joy, unlike mine, despite my privileges. It was humbling. They didn’t complain about their simple life, and I realized how often we grumble over trivialities, taking so much for granted.
It made me wonder: Does happiness really come from expensive things, or is it found in life’s simple moments?
Just something to ponder…
