Islamabad/New Delhi: Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) is a territory blessed with rich natural beauty, encompassing valleys, mountains, and rivers. However, it remains a politically sensitive and disputed region. Divided primarily into two parts, the area faces challenges including a limited number of tourists and ongoing political instability. While the people of PoK are described as peace-loving, their desires regarding their future are varied, with some wishing to remain part of Pakistan, while many reportedly aspire for independence or integration with India. This special report delves into the situation and direction of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.
Geographically, PoK is exceptionally beautiful. Yet, politically, it is a highly sensitive and controversial area. PoK is broadly divided into two principal administrative regions: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan. AJK is said to have its own elected government, whereas Gilgit-Baltistan is administered directly by Pakistan. Both regions comprise numerous districts and smaller areas.
Despite its natural splendour, the number of tourists visiting PoK each year remains quite limited. Political instability and security concerns deter many potential visitors. Nevertheless, those who do travel to the region are invariably impressed by the charm of its valleys and the grandeur of its mountains.
The rivers in PoK are considered remarkably pure. The region is also home to parts of the Karakoram mountain range, including K2 (Mount Godwin-Austen), the world’s second-highest peak, located partly in Gilgit-Baltistan and partly in China’s Xinjiang province. This formidable mountain attracts climbers from across the globe due to its challenging routes and majestic presence. It is believed that Gilgit-Baltistan boasts some of the cleanest air in the world, being remote from industrial pollution and maintaining a largely pristine natural environment. Similarly, the water from the mountain waterfalls and rivers in the area is also considered very pure.
Regarding the mindset of the people in PoK, they are generally peace-loving but appear significantly troubled by decades of political conflict and instability. They are reportedly concerned about their identity and future. When it comes to their aspirations, there is diversity among the residents. Some people desire to remain with Pakistan, while others wish for independence or express a desire to join India. In recent years, numerous reports have emerged suggesting that many people in PoK are unhappy with Pakistani rule and have expressed their wish to be integrated with India.
It is important to note that PoK holds strategic significance for both India and Pakistan. For India, it is crucial because it is considered an integral part of Jammu and Kashmir, which India maintains is under illegal occupation by Pakistan. India has consistently asserted that PoK is its territory and is resolute in its commitment to reclaiming it. On the other hand, for Pakistan, PoK serves as a buffer zone and also provides its only direct land connectivity route with China.
However, there are also reports alleging that Pakistan has committed atrocities against the people of PoK, depriving them of their basic rights and suppressing their freedom. International human rights organizations have repeatedly voiced concerns over these issues, but the situation reportedly remains largely unchanged.
