Srinagar/Ahmedabad: The recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam has not only shattered the peace in Kashmir but has also dealt a severe blow to the region’s crucial tourism industry. Coming during the peak summer vacation period, when Kashmir’s cool climate and natural beauty are a favoured escape, particularly for tourists from Gujarat, the attack has reportedly resulted in the cancellation of up to 90% of planned holiday bookings.

Kashmir, often referred to as ‘heaven on earth,’ has once again been targeted by terrorists. The attack that occurred on April 22 sent shockwaves across the nation. The violence in Pahalgam has directly impacted the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir. With schools on vacation and intense summer heat prevailing, many Gujaratis traditionally opt to visit cooler destinations like Kashmir. Large numbers of people usually travel to the valley during this time to enjoy its natural beauty and vacation. However, following the terrorist attack, many Gujarati tourists have altered their travel plans.

Reports indicate that 90% of tour plans for Kashmir originating from Gujarat have been cancelled. The enthusiasm for visiting Jammu and Kashmir during the vacation period has significantly decreased. Specifically, within the last two days, approximately 4,000 bookings from Vadodara and Anand alone have been cancelled. Advance bookings for trains and buses travelling to destinations like Jammu Tawi, Katra, and Vaishno Devi have also seen cancellations. A significant amount, estimated at ₹3 lakh, has been refunded for advance bookings at the Vadodara and Anand railway stations.

Tourism serves as a primary pillar of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy. Destinations like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Srinagar are popular attractions for both domestic and international travellers. Following the attack, there has been a sharp decline in the number of tourists visiting the region. According to estimates, the attack is likely to cause a loss of up to ₹12,000 crore to Kashmir’s tourism industry, potentially impacting the livelihoods of around 2.5 lakh people. The wave of cancellations has led to a significant drop in revenue for airlines, transport services, hotels, and tour operators.

Currently, an atmosphere of fear prevails among potential tourists. People are now prioritizing safety and security when selecting their travel destinations. Instead of Kashmir, many individuals are reportedly choosing alternative locations such as Delhi, Haridwar, Himachal Pradesh, Shimla, or destinations in South India.
